This week we have been bird spotting and learning to recognize different birds visiting our school grounds. To support this learning I am asking the children to do a little bird spotting of their own this weekend. For 10 minute sessions please record the types of birds and numbers of birds visiting your garden. You can bird watch for as many 10 minute sessions as you want (weather permitting) but ask that you do for at least two 10 minute sessions, one on Saturday and one on Sunday. The children have recorded sightings in charts and have also looked at tallying as a way of recording, so they may choose how to record their sightings. There are some useful bird spotting resources on http://www.naturedetectives.org.uk/download/hunt_birds.htm
to help identify the birds or you may like to visit the library for some bird books.
A special message for Freddie who has been off school poorly. We miss you and want to say…
The rain did not stop us having fun at Dunham Massey. Enjoy seeing the children dressed up as servants and doing jobs you never thought they would with such enthusiasm! killing bed bugs, emptying chamber pots, polishing the silver and setting the table were just some of the jobs we were taught how to do properly in order to meet Lady Stanford’s high expectations!

Healthy Eating Autumn 2.
This term we welcomed Julie, from the health team into class to teach us all about eating healthily. She reminded us to eat at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day and showed us how to wash our hands properly. She spoke to us about portion sizes and shared some lovely healthy recipes with us.
As you can see we have had great fun learning about eating healthily.

I am delighted to announce that Ellenbrook is the winner of the Walk to School week competition that was run last half term. Lots of schools took part from all over the city but in true Ellenbrook style we managed to fight off the competition with a winning score of 3.80. This means that most children walked to school on 4 out of 5 days.
As a reward for the children’s efforts, our school will receive a scooterpod to store pupils’ scooters, helping to encourage a sustainable and fun way to travel to school.
The winning class, with an average walking rate of 4.40, was Year 5. Well done to everyone in this class; you will all receive a high visibility zip pull that you put on your coat or bag to help keep you visible in the dark!
Well done Ellenbrook – keep walking!
Walk to School Week 2014.
13th – 17th October will be Walk to School Week at Ellenbrook. We would like as many pupils as possible to walk to school during this week. Walking is great exercise, healthy, free and helps reduce pollution, traffic and congestion around school.
On Friday 10th October, each pupil will be issued with a coloured band on their bookbag/schoolbag which will be ‘hole punched’ each morning if they have walked to school. At the end of the week the teachers will collect up all the bands and count up how many pupils have walked. The campaign has been organised by Salford’s Road Safety team and there will be prizes for all members of the class who have walked the most! Our school’s results will also be counted in the Salford wide competition against other schools and the school with the best walking rate will win a ‘scooterpod’, a colourful and fun way to store scooters.
If you don’t usually walk to school, please make an effort to participate in walk to school week. Even if you manage just one day in the week it will make a difference to the traffic around school.
Happy walking everyone!
